I am very new at this. Just my first day as notary.
I was asked to notarize an out of state release of lien document. I followed all the steps for acknowledgement, got everything done BUT have now realized I made a BIG mistake. On the acknowledgement form it stated that "On__day of _____, I personally witnessed _____, ________ of ________ company sign.......etc."
Well, after the name of the of the signer, I added the title...I did not even realize I did that till later. What do I do? How do I correct my mistake? Should I cross out the title, after the fact, date and inital when I corrected it or should I do the whole process again? The document has not gone out and I have emailed and left a message for the person not to send out with this mistake.

It is always best to use the acknowledgment prescribed by California even though we are allowed to use acknowledgment wording for documents filed in other states. You never know if the other state's wording is correct/compliant so it is safest to just stick with your own states requirments - which, each Notary is only responsible to do anyway. Download a copy of the handbook from the SOS website. Get to know it well. You can also print out acknowledgments and jurats directly from their site.
